New to IIT Mandi?

// Last updated: February 21st, 2021

  • Campus: IIT Mandi is the only IIT with no clear boundary walls. Consequently, you get the feel of the all-enveloping Shivalik range of Himalayas to be your abode. For the record, there are two campuses: North Campus (NC) and South Campus (SC), with a current distance of about 3.5 km. The two campuses are separated by a mountain (yes!), which itself is part of the IIT, and the river Uhl flows alongside the buildings (the sound of the fast-flowing water is mesmerizing!).

  • Buses: Free institute buses ply frequently between the two campuses (follow the link in the bottom-right of the institute website for the latest schedule). There are institute (as well as HRTC and private) buses between the campuses and Mandi town (schedule available at the above link). It takes about 40 minutes to reach SC from Mandi, and another 10 minutes to reach NC from SC.

  • Shopping in and around: Both the campuses have a grocery shop, a vegetable shop, a stationery shop, and several canteens. Apart from these, SC is situated near the village Kamand (population about 210!) and NC near Salgi (population about 180!). You may visit the villages for local food and some more small purchases. For not-so-common items, you need to travel to Mandi.

  • Shopping at Mandi: Though Mandi is not a big city, its market is quite decent. You can find showrooms for various technology (Dell, Samsung, LG, etc.) and clothing (Levi's, Adidas, Reebok, etc.) brands, vehicle service-centers, and even Domino's and Zomato. Typically you can go to Mandi, buy stuff and eat food, and come back within 4-5 hours. However, the market is closed on Sundays and hence Saturdays are the best bet. In order to avail institute buses at popular times, it is advisable to book seats in advance (using a login you get upon joining).

  • Online shopping: Amazon and Flipkart deliver almost everything to both the campuses.

  • Banks: There are two banks in SC: SBI and PNB, with respective ATMs.

  • Petrol pump: The nearest petrol pump is about half a kilometre from SC (Indian Oil).

  • Hiking: The area is a gem for hike/trek-lovers. Griffon Peak is the one from where most campus pics are taken; if you are lucky, you may be invited for a hike to the same by the Director (Prof. T A Gonsalves at my time) within a week of your joining!
